031 Summer's End

Summer's end: the annual Labor Day picnic. Burgers, Italian sausage and dogs on the grill, chicken and baked bean from the oven, corn on the cob and desserts on the table. It is the annual family picnic next door and now I know Aunt Irene, Grammy Cindy, and Noo Noo. It is a picnic where the boys play ball and the girls create shows while the grandparents reminisce and everybody eats some more.

030 It Rained Last Night

029 Liberty High School Grenadier Band

The best part of high school foot ball is...
I should say the game, but as a former band parent, I'm going with the band. Liberty has a great band and will march in the Rose Bowl Parade this year. Today was the first game of the football season and sadly, Liberty lost.

028 The Doggie in the Window

I've seen cats watching the world sitting in a window, but I think this is the first time I've seen a dog.  His name is Cooper and he lives next door.  I'm not sure if he is allowed to be up in the window, or if this is a part of his secret life when nobody's home.

027 The Game

At the end of most games, 4 runs, 9 hits and 2 errors is not bad. In fact, it might even have been a win. Not for the Iron Pigs. Not when they played the Pawtucket Red Sox who ended the game with 14 runs, 19 hits and 2 errors. Rich said it was like watching batting practice for the Sox except it was the game. The popped bubble gum pretty much sums up both the game and the entire series against the Sox. I just didn't know it when I took the picture.

026 Hockey Practice

Across the corner from the house is the girls high school softball field. This time of year it serves as the practice field for Liberty's Field Hockey Team. School started yesterday, and the their first game is Saturday.

024 John's Work

John lives in an area nursing home. Retired from the Steel he hasn't been able to take care of himself in the home he built in the 1950's with his own hands and the help of a few friends. He lived there watching his children grow, welcoming grandchildren, and caring for his wife in the end stages of cancer. Now he keeps busy watching TV and taking little walks around the yard at the nursing home. He is grateful for his little room, the walks in the yard, the cleanliness of the home, the food that is provided, and the staff who take care of his needs.  His work is now the puzzle books his daughter brings him; crosswords, word searches and Sudoku.

023 My Heart Does That Sometimes

This is a quilted wall hanging I made of my heart. If it looks a little broken, that's because it is, but not in the sense of lost love. The mitral valve flops and the heart is a bit off when it beats sometimes, hence the EKG in the border. Every year I have an echo-cardiogram to see what it's up to and I often think it looks like a severe thunderstorm over the Midwest when they turn the color Doppler on.

022 Front Porch Rocker

Friday afternoon on my day off. The front porch is the place to sit and read, and on this particular day, sip a glass of wine as well.

020 Adventures with Sam

I ran into Sam today and we took the afternoon for some adventures. First we surprised Rich with lunch. Then Sam taught me how to play Lego Indiana Jones DS. I didn't do too well. Then we went to take the photo of the day at Nisky Hill Cemetery. Sam, who is 8, took more pictures than I did. While it may be breaking the rules of a photo a day, I decided to post the pictures he took of me. I wished I'd had another camera to take a picture of him working with the DSLR and post that as the photo of the day. Since I don't, I decided on the this photo of Sam because we shared this photo adventure together, and I really liked the way the light shines on the Chi Rho and down on Sam.

019 Spinach. It's what for supper

Spinach Feta Bake. A bit of a favorite in the household. It is probably best described as a spanakopata without the phyllo, or spinach quiche without the crust. Very easy and pretty yummy.

018 Band Camp

Living two blocks from the local middle school has some advantages. One of them is having a parade in front of our house every morning during band camp. The new sixth graders not only have new music to learn, but also have to walk and play at the same time. The repertoire is three songs, two from previous years and one brand new for everyone.

017 My Office Window, HDR

I've always found it curious that the office window of the woman pastor depicts a woman clinging to the cross while a storm rages at her feet. A metaphor for ministry?

I chose to work this as HDR partly because the room is a little dark and partly to bring out the colors of the glass.

016 My Shoes Match!

I know, shoes come in pairs and they usually match each other and all of my shoes match each other. But this last month they did not match each other on my feet. The stitches are out, the pin is pulled, the bandages gone and the swelling is down. Yesterday the doctor said I could wear running shoes. Yippee!!!

015 Oops

I had shot for the day.  I even had a back up shot. Really. Truly. I'm not slacking here. Unfortunately I deleted the photos from the compact flash before I realized none of them had been transferred to the computer.  Oops.

014 Survey Instrument

013 - The Birthday Guy

August 13 really is his birthday. We celebrated with special birthday Apple Cranberry Crisp on the front porch swing.

012 Gurgle Fish Pitcher

I love to surprise people when they pour water from the gurgle fish pitcher. It has a wonderful design as well as making noise when water is poured. It was a challenge to figure out what I wanted to present in this photo, what to keep and what to crop away. I settled on a detail of the handle, knowing there are other interesting bits.

011 Vanessa's Water

She comes home from work and grabs what she needs for the meeting at church: datebook, keys, and a bottle of water.

010 I Dream of France

Sunday evening in our house is quiet and supper is sometimes eaten in our room. The food was not French this night, just take out from a local restaurant, and the wine was mellow.

009 Black-eyed Susans

Rich was a ladder on the porch roof fixing the fascia when I took this picture in the front garden. I was supposed to be keeping an eye on him.
008 Wedding Bubbles

007 Flamenco Flower

Musikfest in Bethlehem! We didn't do as much of Musikfest this year what with a pin in my toe and my foot in a surgical shoe. We did see a couple of folk groups the first night at Leiderplatz and Lyricplatz. We also went down for our annual lunch date at Volksplatz. While we did not "Eat our way through Musikfest with Bill White," Rich had a plan: bratwurst at Festplatz, beer at Volksplatz, roasted corn at Handwerksplatz and an apple dumpling from the Cup. The act at Volkplatz was a Flamenco guitar and dancers.

006 Morning Glory HDR

This is a photo of patience combing macro photography and bracketing for HDR while a slight breeze was blowing.
006 Tuesday Morning

004 My Desk, Monday Afternoon

Monday is computer day. The day the next Sunday's bulletin gets laid out and printed for the copy ladies at church who collate it.

003 Sam & Sofie

While August 1 was our 10th anniversary, we celebrated with a party at Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs game versus the Rochester Red Wings on August 3. I even threw out a first pitch that bounced on home plate. It was first time in 10 years that we had the entire wedding party together, and still don't have a picture of all them in one photo. The 'Pigs won the game and mascot Ferrous came to visit our group. I missed most of the game catching up with friends and family.
Sam and Sofie are our godchildren. Sam lives in Bethlehem, PA and Sofie lives in Syracuse, NY. The red Iron Pigs hat is from the give away special on that day for all kids under 12.

002 This Little Piggy

This is a long story that begins with triathlon goal that is interrupted by surgery. All is not lost as the hoped for triathlon is next year. St. Paul quotes Isaiah in Romans 10:15 "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" This foot of mine that brings good news has been cut open, broken, stitched together,  straightened with a pin and held together by screws.  As a friend pointed out, "Sounds like Jesus to me."

001 Reeves

August 1 is our 10th anniversary.  It was also the last day of Vacation Bible School at St. John's which was extremely convenient for taking the first photo of the day.
